Lets at this point be very realistic a Basset Hound is NOT for everyone, while they are adoreable as babies they soon grow in to bundles of mischief and require a great deal of attention, your love and above all - your patience. They are nearly as dependant on you as a human baby, this information is here to help you - we already know what it is to be loved by a Basset Hound!
If not - go no further!

Please read these points carefully

1·         Bassets are hounds; don’t expect the alertness of a terrier, the protectiveness of a guard dog or indeed the
demands for attention or affection of a toy dog. Nor expect the versatility of one of the breeds that can be
obedience trained - a basset hound will only disappoint you. To expect a basset to be more than he /she is,
is not only unfair to the breed but to the individual dog.
2·         Bassets must be kept home by strong, sturdy fences and gates that close properly, they are a scent hound
with a keen nose, second only to that of a Bloodhound. If allowed to escape they will, Basset hounds have
keen known to become lost and even killed on the roads by following an interesting scent.
·3         Bassets can do very well living in a kennel provided they have the proper exercise, care and attention.
However, no Basset should be tied or chained up, nor left alone for any great period of time and it would
            suffer greatly as a result.
·4         Bassets can be prone to obesity that can be stressful to their long spines. Great care should be given to their
feeding and this is probably more important in young dogs than old Bassets, than it is with most other
            breeds of dog.
·5         Please stress on your family, friends and visitors that having a Basset around means that doors and gates
            need to be securely closed?
·6         Please stress on them that food should not be left around for the Basset to get hold of, or to feed titbits
            from the table?
·7         Please commit to regular veterinary visits for your Basset? Please be willing to follow instructions about
healthcare you basset may need throughout its life?
They are SCENT HOUNDS and being wilful and disobedient are all part of their in bred character, if they can be called off a scent they aren't considered to be of any value to the hunt, they aren't couch potatoes they enjoy exercise as adults and although they have a short coat they do moult and will shed their fur over your carpets etc. They dig up plants and lawns, so the keen gardener beware! They have large feet like sponges and they will leave muddy or dirty footprints on clean floors. They have soft mouths and deep lips and they DO SLOBBER and deposits can be found half way up walls and even on the ceiling! They suffer from convenient deafness, and are very persistant, this is so very true of dog hounds, They will escape through open doors and gates and your garden perimeter needs to be "basset-proofed". They also have a wonderful gift......being able to reach the most out of the way places, especially the back for kitchen worktops when you have overlooked someting tasty.

Puppies leave our premises at approximately 8/10 weeks
of age with a Diet Sheet, Rearing Guide, Worming Certificate, 6 weeks insurance, 5 generation pedigree, Kennel Club Registration Certificate, a few days supply of food and the knowledge that we are always available for advice and/or help

Our golden rule - never allow a 10 week old Basset to do anything you wouldn't allow a 10 month old or indeed a 10 year old Basset to do or get away with! Once its been done - there is little chance of it forgetting

To be owned and loved by a Basset Hound you need a big loving heart and sometimes a bank balance to match!
As we only very occasionally have puppies avaliable, the right homes are essential and of paramount importance to us and we only sell puppies to homes where there is a good expectation of a long, happy and healthy life. Our puppies are pets, we do not sell potential stud dogs or brood bitches and all of our Kennel Club Registrations carry "not to be bred from" and "not for export" endorsements. We also ask that if at anytime in the future you are unable to keep the puppy/adult for whatever reason, you return it to us - age is not an issue as none of us know what is around the corner . Anyone buying one of our puppies signs a SALES CONTRACT acknowledging the above as terms and conditions of sale which are legally binding.

Neither of us breed on a large scale, perhaps you would call us "Hobby Breeders" - a litter once ever year or two. The reason, usually because we want something for ourselves. We aim for soundness, type and above all temperament, the breed standard requires a Basset Hound to be placid, never aggressive or timid and affectionate. Puppies need to be socialized, and with this in mind all our puppies are brought up in our home enviroments, with plenty of contact with people - adults and children!
As Officers of one Breed Club - and members of others, we are bound by various Codes of Ethics, and in our duties as Officers and helping Basset Hound Rescue we have seen the other side of puppy sales, the ones that go wrong. The first thing we ask of you is this - please take the time to ask yourself these 5 questions:
Also find out as much as you can about the breed, by knowing the breed it will help you to understand exactly what you can expect from an individual dog. Ask questions - we are always at the end of the telephone to help, read books there are many good ones available either to buy or borrow from the library a large number of the publications available today can be found on the Basset Hound Club of Wales website at www.bhcofwales.org.uk/books. It is far better to have a little knowledge than none at all!
